Cargo & Family Bikes

Sometimes you need to carry more than your bags and a baguette. We offer a variety of bicycles designed for carrying cargo–whether it’s bulky items, children, or even the occasional adult, we’ve got you covered.

 Questions We Often Hear

+ I have one kid, what is the best cargo bike for my family?

Most solid bikes with upright geometry can carry one kid, either in front (Yepp mini-12 months to 3ish/ 33 lbs) or on a solid rear rack (Yepp Maxi- 18 months to 40lbs). However, a sturdier bike like the Workcycles GR8/FR8 or the Gazelle Tour Populair will eliminate unsteadiness under load and provide more options for also carrying cargo. For an electric option, the Xtracycle RFA Sport can carry a toddler to an adult on the rear rack in about the same footprint as a standard bike.

+ I have two kids, which cargo bike is best for us?

For younger kids, a front loading bike like the Workcycles KR8, Urban Arrow Family, or R&M Load is a great way to keep an eye on them while easily carrying toys, snacks and groceries, and all have rain covers for all weather commuting. For older kids, the Xtracycle RFA, eSwoop or Stoker, Workcycles Fr8 or the Riese and Müller Multicharger are great options that can carry a load, but feel more like a "regular" bike unloaded.

+ I have three kids, which cargo bikes will work?

Second benches that allow seating for up to 4 are available for the Workcycles KR8 and the Urban Arrow Family. There is a third seat option for the Riese and Muller Load 75 and Packster as well. Three kids over 4 years old (no child seat) fit comfortably on the rear deck of the Xtracycle Swoop, and it is possible to fit a yepp mini on an Edgerunner for families with younger kids.

+ Do I need electric assist?

Technically no, you can power your bike with carbs, but boy will you love it if you do have it! So many customers have come in and told us that an e-Cargo bike changed their lives. Assist is the difference between, "Well, I guess we could ride there, but I have a headache and the traffic is bad." and "Sure, let's ride, and let's stop at the pizza place/library/ playground on the way home, even though it's out of the way and up the hill!" Having assist will change your cargo bike from something fun that can occasionally be a slog, to the easiest, most fun transportation option around, even under less than ideal circumstances.
