Kids Bikes

We take kids bikes pretty seriously - that’s why we offer a range of brands and models, each designed to be lightweight, performance oriented, and built with features that meet your child right where they are at developmentally. We stand by the idea that riding a bike should be a joy from day 1, and that’s why we encourage parents to consider investing a bike that is worthy of their child’s everlasting love of bicycles and joy of riding.

Questions We Often Hear

+ How old does a kid need to be to ride a balance bike?

Technically if they can run, they can ride a balance bike, but it’s somewhat personality driven. 2-3 is usually a good bet. For a 4 or smaller 5 year old, the Strider 14X allows them to seamlessly make the transition from balance to pedal bike.

+ What’s the best way to learn to ride?

From personal experience, a balance bike is THE way to go. Carice has vivid memories of the trauma of taking off her training wheels at the ripe old age of 7. Her two older kids made the transition from balance to pedaling independently in an hour or less, without tears or crashes. For older learners, we can remove the pedals to let them get the balance bike experience on a bigger bike before taking the plunge into pedaling.

+ Why are some kids’ bikes so expensive?

Bikes that are designed with a lot of kid- specific parts and an obsession over weight are definitely more expensive than standard kid bikes. Although we tend to roll our eyes about “weight weenies” in adult cycling, for a 45 pound kid, the difference between a 28 pound bike and a 14 pound bike is enormous. Higher quality parts make these bikes repairable instead of disposable, and allow them to be passed through several siblings, and still have a high resale value. Plus they’re more fun to ride, which makes the whole family happier.

+ What Size bike does my kid need?

It depends! Kids come in all shapes, sizes and ability levels, and it’s hard to tell over the internet. We think that actually sitting on a bike is the best way to know for sure, and we’re happy to set yours up on a couple of options in the shop.
